Surely there are better approaches, though.Īnd strangely enough, that truck is still running today. To this day, I'm not really sure how a 'real' mechanic would've solved that problem. Reassembled the differential, installing my home-made lock bolt with red locktite and a lock washer. Went about my business replacing the axle bearing. Took it over to the grinder and ground off the threads except for the top 1/2" or so (just like the original lock bolt, but much uglier). Tapped threads on it all the way to the top. Rummaged around the shop and found a 5/16" grade 8 bolt that was 1/4" longer than the original lock bolt. ![]() Drilled the lock-bolt hole about 1/4" deeper than it had been before. I went ahead and removed the differential. Bolts can sometimes be difficult to remove since some are intentionally left without a grip while on others the heads might have been shorn off by a mechanical malfunction. It took out a chunk of the differential carrier where about 3/8" of the broken-off lock bolt was sticking through the pin. I turned the diff so that the end of the pin where the lock bolt went through faced up and away from me. but here's what my brilliant 23-year-old mind came up with: I really don't know what the proper fix is in that situation. The axles won't come out with the pin still in there. When this happens (and it DOES happen), you can usually get the piece out with a magnet. The lock bolt broke off so that the 'pin' on the end of the bolt was still stuck in the differential housing. Just make sure the socket is straight- don't want to round this bolt off further.Ībout 10 years ago I did the same job on my '85 Ford F150. It won't hurt anything to remove a bearing cap if that's what it takes to get a socket on the bolt. In that case, you'll probably need to hammer a 6pt wrench or socket onto it. If the head is rounded off, though, then a 12-point box-end wrench might not work. double up another wrench onto it to break the bolt loose. I usually remove these with regular 5/16" box end wrench. In other words the the pin was broken or near broken before you touched it.Those things can be kindof a pain. Did the head of the come out easily or did you torque on it and it broke? If it came out easily then the remains of the pin is probably loose and the 638 trick will likely work. If the pin is bent in the hole then it is a different story. That stuff is very strong and you may be able to turn the broken part out by turning the drill rod. You will have removed you drilling guide bolt before putting the drill rod in the hole with the 638. It only sets in the absence of air so any spillage does really matter too much. Then take ⅛ piece of drill rod about 6 or so inches long( you could use the other end of you long drill bit( non business end))Ĭlean it good and use some 638 locktite and glue the ⅛ rod into the broken pin. Use your drilled bolt as guide to drill a ⅛ hole in the remains of the pin. A 10mm bolt length would be fine, the thread is 8mmx1.25 pretty standard on a LC. Make a bush drill guide from a grade 4 Toyota bolt and drill ⅛ hole through the length of the bolt. If it was me doing it I think I would buy the long ⅛ drill or get one from an industrial tool supplier.
